Roux en Y Gastric Bypass

What is it

The Laparoscopic  Roux- en-Y Gastric Bypass has been in common use since 1966. It is very useful for the treatment of severe reflux in a person who also has obesity.

 

How is it done

​

The operation is keyhole and involves the formation of a 30ml stomach pouch. Two small bowel joins are then created that bypass food directly into the bowel.   The second join keeps bile away from the stomach and stops reflux. No stomach is removed with this operation

  • Excellent resolution of obesity related conditions.

  • 75% of diabetic  patients will go into full remission 

  • Excellent resolution of reflux in most people

  • Dumping syndrome, which is very helpful for providing an aversion to the wrong foods, fat or sugar

  • The quality of eating is very good. Able to eat three small healthy meals per day

Considerations

  • Requirement for lifelong daily vitamins

  • Requirement for lifelong yearly blood tests to check vitamin and micronutrient levels

  • 6% risk stomach ulcers, which are treated with medical treatment

  • Care must be taken with anti-inflammatories as may cause ulcers

  • 2% risk of internal hernia, which require surgery to fix
